The prices of Scottish holiday cottages vary a lot - from very expensive, luxury castles to cheap simple cottages. Cheap properties may reflect the fact they are simple bothies, perhaps without electricity - or the owner is offering a credit crunch bargain break! The top end of the self-catering market is expensive but they will have lots of luxury extras in the house - such as fancy bubble bath, toweling robes, iPod docks etc - many of them are equipped like 5 star hotels and those extra special touches do make for a very special holiday house.

Booking a cottage directly with the owner means that you can ask them directly all the questions that you have about the property and clarify any points that the website didn't make clear. By emailing or speaking on the telephone to the owner you can get a good idea of whether a particular cottage is suitable for you and meets all your requirements.
